The night of St. Lawrence (August 10) is traditionally associated with the passing of the meteoric swarm of the Perseids, a phenomenon popularly and erroneously referred to as falling stars but also poetically tears of St. Lawrence, considered evocative of the ardent carbons on which the saint was martyred. Indeed, in those days, the Earth’s atmosphere is crossed by a number of small meteors much higher than normal. The phenomenon is particularly visible to our latitudes as the summer sky is often serene.
The poetry of Giovanni Pascoli, which interprets meteoric swarms as celestial tears, is celebrated, precisely from the day dedicated to the saint, August X:
